FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED SINCE 1989

The Two Mile Bay Sailing Club was established in 1989 by Anthony (Tony) and Alexandra Landl. In the early days, the business operated as a sail boat hire business, consisting of a few yachts and a couple of Hobie Cats, and ran out of a small shed on site.

In 2000, Tony expanded and built what remains the backbone of the main structure of the Sailing Club. He also diversified into hospitality, securing the business’s first liquor license, and extending his offering to include alcohol, coffee, and simple pre-packaged food.

The initial liquor license allowed the service of alcohol between the hours of 12pm – 2pm during the summer months. A major feat by Tony at the time! It was later extended to 8am – 6pm year round.

In the early days, Tony used to remunerate his sons, Torben and Jan, to sail the yachts out to draw attention to the Sailing Club. Fast forward 10 years and in 2009, both sons took over the running of the business for a couple of years. Their number one priority was to install a bar! The same bar that stands today.

In 2012, the licensed hours were increased to 10am – 10pm, 7 days a week, as it stands today. It was also around this time that the first wood-fired pizza ovens were installed on site and the menu expanded.

In 2016, the land on which the Two Mile Bay Sailing Club sits was rightfully returned to Ngāti Tūwharetoa and a long term lease was put in place with The Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board. The Landl family have enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Ngāti Tūwharetoa and look forward to continuing this relationship well into the future.

In 2017, the family business succession plan came into effect, and Torben and Jan purchased the Two Mile Bay Sailing Club from Tony.

Since then, Torben and Jan have breathed new life into the site, including landscaping the outdoor areas, carpeting and installing new sails to the interior to ensure it is weather tight and warm all year round, new larger pizza ovens have been installed, along with four new toilets.

In 2023 the Two Mile Bay Sailing Club became the official naming rights' sponsor of the Taupō Half Marathon, run each year in August.
